History of women's perfume
Thursday, May 29, 2008
Womens fragrance is more than thousands of years old. The use of selected herbs and flowers to scent the atmosphere was how a love for fragrance started. It was familiar for people to put on a garland of flowers, or to hang fragrant plants indoors, and affix aromatic plants to sweet-smelling rush spread on a floor. One of the old use of perfumes come form the flaming of incense and other aromatic herbs used in religious functions, often the frankincense, aromatic gums and myrrh, gathered from trees. And the word "perfume" is from Latin, meaning "through smoke".

The Egyptians were the first to incorporate this into their culture followed by the ancient Hindus, Chinese, Arabs, Greeks, and Romans. The Egyptians invented glass, and womens scent were one of the primary uses for glass. The earliest use of these bottles is Egypt, date to around 1000 BC. From 9th century, high capacity trade between Byzantium and Venice brought perfumes into Europe. There was a good deal trade within Arabia, in bringing it from Baghdad to Muslim Spain.

Scent notes for various seasons
Monday, May 19, 2008
Just like you have various styles of clothing for special occasions and seasons, you must also have a wardrobe of scents so as to match your moods and the season. Deciding on which perfume to put on has a lot to do with personal liking and mood, but there are some tried-and-true rules for choosing scents that matches different seasons and times.

Choosing Scents for Seasons

Step1:
Always choose light florals and citrus scents for spring as well as summer. Heavier one can be overwhelming during the hotter days, particularly when they mix with body sweat.
Step2:
Pick perfumes that are fresh and revitalizing for the hottest days. Wearing a citrus or a synthetic " breeze" will actually make you feel much cooler.
Step3:
Test with lighter spicy notes in the autumn. Scents with cinnamon and other spice undertones are warming but not overly heavy, and are perfect for cooler days.
Step4:
Choose heavier one such as musk and spice for winter wear. Perfume with Oriental notes such as sandalwood, patchouli etc work well for winter months.

Is cologne and EDT the same?
Monday, May 12, 2008
Men are very often challenged or in some cases besieged at selecting a proper men's fragrance. What to buy aftershave, cologne or Eau de toilette? Contrary, to what many men suppose, it is not so difficult to pick the proper fragrance, once you understand each one's function and your special needs. Some times, you may require more than one type as your daily needs will vary.

Before getting started, you must understand the differences between men's cologne, Eau De Toilette (EDT) and an aftershave. It is not all the same, although it may appear both cologne and aftershave have an alike scent in the bottle, but in reality there is difference. Aftershave is intended to use after a man shaves. It closes the pores and offers an intense sensation after its use No need to worry, this is the result of the aftershave closing the pores. But always remember that, cologne's odor is always stronger, and will last longer than aftershave. It is used as a fragrance to provide a person a pleasant scent. The expression EDT is a common term that is used in Europe, where cologne is a more commonly used in the states. So, cologne and EDT are the same and not different.

How to preserve your scent
Tuesday, May 6, 2008
As we wear a perfume it is also important to store it properly. It is because the fragrance compounds in it will degrade or break down if stored improperly in the presence of light, heat, oxygen and other organic materials. Appropriate preservation involves keeping them away from sources of heat and storing them where they are not exposed to light. A bottle that is opened will keep its aroma for up to a year, as long as it is filled, but as the perfume level goes down, the existence of oxygen in the air that is enclosed in the bottle will begin to alter the smell character, in time distorting them.

Fragrances are best preserved when it is held in light-tight aluminium bottles or in their unique packaging when not used, and refrigerated at a fairly low temperatures between 3-7 degrees Celsius. Even though it is hard to remove oxygen completely from the headspace of a stored flask, instead of rollers opting for spray dispensers "open" bottles will minimize oxygen exposure. These sprays also have advantage of isolating fragrance inside a container and preventing it from mixing with dust and other particles which will degrade and vary the quality of a perfume.
